The best app for reading African books is not necessarily the app with the largest catalogue. It is the one that helps you find the books you actually want, pay without unnecessary friction and read in the format that suits you.
When people search for the best apps for reading African books, catalogue size is usually the first thing they check, but it should not be the only thing.
Some readers want contemporary Nigerian romance. Others want African audiobooks, children's stories, literary fiction or a broad international shop that also carries African writers. No single platform does all of those jobs equally well.
This guide compares six useful options. It focuses on what each app is best for, where it is available and what to check before you commit.
1. Sọna Reader: Best for Buying African eBooks in Naira and Reading in One Library
Sọna is a digital publishing and reading platform built for African writers, publishers and readers first, while remaining open to everyone.
Readers browse and buy books on readsona.com. Full books always open in the Sọna Reader apps and may also open in the protected browser reader when the rights holder enables it. The same account connects the website, library and app. Purchased books, gifts and approved eARCs appear together in the reader's library.
What Sọna Does Well
- A catalogue led by African and diaspora authors
- Prices displayed in naira on the Nigerian storefront
- Direct book pages that authors can share
- Samples and previews before purchase where available
- Reading themes, font controls, bookmarks, highlights, notes and progress tracking
- Secure eARC reading and verified review workflows
- Free and discounted titles alongside paid books
What to Know
Purchasing happens on the website. Full books always open in the native Sọna Reader apps and may also open in Sọna's protected browser reader when the rights holder enables it.
Sọna is a strong starting point if your priority is discovering current African commercial fiction and buying directly from an Africa-first platform. Visit readsona.com/download for the current iOS and Android links.
2. AkooBooks: Best for African Audiobooks and Spoken Word
AkooBooks focuses on Black and African audiobooks and spoken-word content. Its App Store listing describes a credit-based membership, offline downloads and a catalogue spanning fiction, romance, non-fiction, young adult books and other genres.
What AkooBooks Does Well
- African and Black audiobook discovery
- Listening during travel, exercise or household tasks
- Offline listening after download
- A format that supports African authors, narrators and voice talent
What to Know
AkooBooks is audio-first. It is not the right choice if you specifically want to read ebook text on screen. Check current regional availability, membership terms and catalogue access in the app store before subscribing.
3. BookSmart by Worldreader: Best for Free Early-Years Reading
BookSmart is a free digital reading app from Worldreader, designed primarily for parents and caregivers reading with children aged zero to five.
Worldreader says the app includes thousands of culturally relevant children's books, activities and practical reading tips, with no paywall or subscription.
What BookSmart Does Well
- Free access for families
- Culturally relevant children's stories
- Early-reading routines and shared activities
- Reading challenges and parent guidance
What to Know
This is not a general adult-fiction store. It serves a specific and important audience: families building an early reading habit. If you are looking for romance, literary fiction or adult non-fiction, choose a broader platform.
4. Kobo Books: Best for a Broad International Library Across Apps and eReaders
Kobo offers ebooks and audiobooks through its mobile apps, web reader and Kobo eReaders. Its app supports downloads, reading customisation and progress syncing across supported devices.
Kobo is not exclusively African, but its international catalogue can be useful when you already know the author, publisher or title you want.
What Kobo Does Well
- A broad international ebook and audiobook shop
- Mobile apps plus dedicated eReaders
- Font, spacing, margin and theme controls
- Offline downloads
- Reading-position syncing for supported Kobo content
What to Know
African-book discovery may require more deliberate searching because the shop serves a global audience. Availability and pricing can vary by territory. Search by author and publisher, not only by broad phrases such as “African books”.
5. Kindle: Best for Readers Already Using Amazon's Book Ecosystem
You do not need a Kindle device to use Kindle books. Amazon provides Kindle apps for iOS, Android, PC and Mac, and Kindle for Web is available in supported locations.
Kindle's advantage is scale. Many Nigerian and African authors publish there, particularly writers who distribute internationally through Amazon KDP.
What Kindle Does Well
- A very large international catalogue
- Reading across phones, tablets, computers and Kindle devices
- Familiar accounts for readers who already buy from Amazon
- Strong availability of independently published books
What to Know
Discoverability is uneven. A large catalogue does not guarantee that local or independent African titles will surface easily. Payment options, prices and title availability can also vary by marketplace and location.
6. Google Play Books: Best for a Flexible Cross-Device Library
Google Play Books combines a large ebook and audiobook shop with mobile and computer access. Its Android listing highlights offline downloads, custom shelves and a library that works across phones, tablets and computers.
What Google Play Books Does Well
- Android integration
- Offline reading
- Custom shelves and synced notes
- A broad international catalogue
- Access across mobile and desktop devices
What to Know
Like Kindle and Kobo, it is a general global store rather than an African-book specialist. Search results depend heavily on the title, author and publisher metadata supplied to the store.
How to Choose the Right African Reading App
Ask five questions before choosing:
- What format do I want? Choose an ebook reader for text, AkooBooks for audio or BookSmart for early-years family reading.
- What books am I trying to find? A specialist African platform may make discovery easier. A global shop may be better for a title already distributed internationally.
- How will I pay? Check the displayed currency, accepted payment method and any regional restrictions before building a wishlist.
- Where will I read? Confirm iOS, Android, browser and eReader support based on the devices you own.
- Do I need offline access? Do not assume it is included. Check the app's current description and download rules.
A Better Way to Search for African Books
Do not rely on one broad search. Try combinations that reflect how books are actually described:
- Nigerian romance ebooks
- African fantasy by African authors
- Lagos-set fiction
- Ghanaian audiobooks
- African children's stories
- Nigerian historical romance
- African speculative fiction
- Sapphic African fiction
Then search the author's name directly. Many excellent books are easier to find by author or publisher than by continent-wide category labels.
The Short Version
Choose Sọna when you want an Africa-first ebook shop and connected mobile reading library. Choose AkooBooks when you want African audiobooks. Choose BookSmart for free early-years family reading. Use Kobo, Kindle or Google Play Books when you want a broad international catalogue or already use those ecosystems.
The right answer may be more than one app. Keep a specialist platform for discovery and a global platform for titles that are distributed more widely.
